Madonna has been a Friends of Berston (FOB) Board Member since 2014.
Madonna is an architect and current president of THA Architects Engineers, an architectural and engineering firm in business since 1957.
Loren has been a Friends of Berston (FOB) Board Member since 2016 and serves as FOB’s Facilities Committee Chairperson. Loren is an engineer and partner with Giffels-Webster Engineers, a multi-disciplined design firm.
Joshua has been a Friends of Berston (FOB) Board Member since 2014 and currently serves as FOB’s Treasurer. He formerly served as President of Flint City Council where he was a City of Flint Council Member for almost a decade, representing Flint’s Eastside until he retired in December 2015. Joshua currently works for Genesee County.
Louis has been a Friends of Berston Board Member since 2014. Louis is a retired Community Relations Administrator of Health Alliance Plan and is Flint Institute of Art’s Board of Trustees Vice-President.
Valorie has been a Friends of Berston Board Member since 2015, and is currently FOB Board President. Valorie was employed for over 30 years by General Motors Buick Division, where she was recognized as being the first Black female machine repair skilled tradesperson within the Buick Complex. Valorie spent most of her career as a superintendent for Buick Skilled Trades and Buick Quality Assurance. Currently, she is a potter whose work has been shown at the Flint Institute of Arts and at many other arts venues in Michigan. Valorie is currently president of Chosen Few Arts Council.
Ronald has been a Friends of Berston Board Member since 2016, and is a member of FOB’s Government Affairs Committee. Ronald, a Professional Community School Educator was formerly employed with the Beecher School district. He currently owns and operates a small business in the staffing industry.
Janice has been a Friends of Berston Board Member since 2015 and chairs FOB’s Fundraising Committee. Currently, Janice is Senior Vice-president of Economic Development of Flint Genesee County Chamber of Commerce.
Ed (Bean), has been a Friends of Berston Board Member since 2014. Currently, Ed is a trainer with The FWC Berston Boxing Club, and trainer of Claressa Shields, the two-time Olympic Gold Medalist of the newly formed OlympicWomen’s Boxing Division. Ed has been actively involved with Berston Field House since 1979. He currently is employed with International Academy of Flint, where he is head varsity basketball coach for International Academy of Flint’s Boys Basketball Team.
Alvern has been a Friends of Berston Board Member since 2014 and is board vice-president. Alvern, a life-long resident of the City of Flint, grew up just a few blocks away from Berston Field House. He participated in a variety of sports offered at Berston during his formative years. He has worked in the City of Flint (COF) for over 30 years and served as COF’s Chief of Police. Currently, Alvern serves as treasurer of Gospel Temple, MBC Church, of which he has been a life-long member. He and his wife Teressa have one son, Alvern Lock Jr.
B.D. ‘Chris’ Christenson was born in Flint, Michigan. He attended Flint Southwestern Academy
High School, graduating in 1990 and the University of Michigan, Flint and Thomas M. Cooley
Law School, in 1999. Chris has been practicing law in the Flint area for 19 years. He started his
own firm in 2006, Christenson & amp; Fiederlein, PC. He has been active at both the State and Local levels, currently serving as a Commissioner on the State Bar of Michigan’s Board of
Commissioners and having previously served as the Chairperson for the State Bar of Michigan’s young lawyer section as well as past President of the Genesee County Bar Association. In 2010, Chris was chosen as a rising star by the Lawyers Weekly and in 2011, 2012, and 2019 he was selected as a Michigan Super Lawyer. Chris has helped on many committees including being chairperson for several with the local Bar Association. He is married with 2 beautiful daughters and lives in Grand Blanc, Michigan.
Dr. Sounya Walker
Dr. Sounya Walker is currently the Director of Adult Education and Gateway to College program at Mott Community College, Workforce Education & Economic Development Division. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education, Master of Arts in Communication, Specialist of Arts in Educational Leadership, and Doctorate Degree in Leadership in Higher Education. She joined the Friends of Berston Board of Directors in 2019, serving on the Fund Development/Fiscal Sustainability and Human Resource Committees. She is also active in her church and community serving as a volunteer, on boards and committees. Sounya is passionate about education and believes in mentoring and encouraging women, youth and children to reach their highest potential in life. In her spare time, she enjoys 'inging, reading, spending time with her children, family and friends.
Bryant W Nolden is the Genesee County 1st District County Commissioner and serves as Board Vice-Chairman and Government Operations Chair. Mr. Nolden, holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education from Central State University as well as a Master of Public Administration in Education Leadership from the University of Michigan-Flint.
He is the proud product of Flint Community Schools, graduating from Flint Central High School in 1983.
Mr. Nolden has served the Flint Community in numerous ways:
- He was a teacher with the Flint Community Schools from February 1992 to June 2014.
- Bryant was 3rd Ward Councilman with the City of Flint until his election to the County Board.
- Vice President of the Flint City Council for two years.
- He also sits on numerous boards.
- He has served as volunteer Chairman and Director at Berston Field House for the last six years, responsible for day-to-day operations.
When Berston closed its doors, in 2009 he asked the city if he could open the building so the neighborhood could use the facility. He acted in the volunteer capacity for six years.
Nolden became the Executive Director of the Friends of Berston in 2014.
